Reliability is a common concern when it comes to high stakes online exams: ExamOnline has been designed from the ground up to be as robust as it’s possible to make it. The system is has no single point of failure, is tolerant to intermittent or prolonged network / server outages, and recovers transparently. Furthermore ExamOnline can recover from prolonged network / server failure by allowing answers to be saved to local disk or USB stick, and subsequently imported into the system database. ExamOnline is unique in offering a different way to deliver an e-assessment, one which was originally developed to support delivery of the Progress Test at the University of Dundee Medical School (see case study), where it continues to be used extensively. The approach is based on the well-known model of an invigilated examination, with the invigilator in the same room as the candidates sitting the examination. Using this approach, there is no need to upload or specify a candidate group before running an invigilated test.
Candidates simply log in to take the test using a matric ID as login, together with a password controlled by the invigilator, and the system creates a unique session for each candidate. This is a very useful model for Further or Higher Education, where you typically have all the candidates together in one or more locations, with invigilators enforcing exam conditions. Learn more.
